During a pilgrimage to Vrndavana in the early 1990s, Rupa Raghunatha dasa was given the duty of cleaning the house in which Goswami Maharaja stayed. At that time it was owned by his Godbrother Abhirama dasa. One night Rupa Raghunatha was cleaning the house as his spiritual master began to give a lecture at the Krishna-Balaram Mandir, about a hundred yards away from the house. After he was finished, Rupa Raghunatha was supposed to take the key which was hanging on the wall in the house with him to the lecture. Of course, he was also to make sure to lock the door. This was the same key Goswami would use to enter back into the house after his talk.

Naturally, Rupa Raghunatha rushed to finish his cleaning to catch as much of the lecture as possible. He remembered to close the door, locking it by hand, when it suddenly dawned on him that he had left the key inside the house! He didn’t know what to do. “I was too embarrassed to tell Srila Gurudeva, but when he finished the class he went back to his house and demanded to know who was the last person to leave the house.” Someone pointed to Rupa Raghunatha, and he had no choice but to confess that he had inadvertently locked the key inside. Srila Gurudeva was so annoyed, because at first no one had another key. Luckily, to my great relief, someone did eventually come up with another one.”
